Chapter 9—Bryant

He didn’t think she was going to come. Why would she? She’d made it abundantly clear that she didn’t want anything to do with him—even after the explosive afternoon they’d spent together on Sunday, he hadn’t heard a single word from her. Not so much as a message confirming that she’d see him on Friday for the presentation … which he hadn’t been worried about, of course. Willow was nothing if not a professional. She’d given her word that she’d be there, and sure enough, she’d been there, every bit as neat and poised as he remembered her. She’d spoken eloquently about the plants, with a mixture of informative anecdotes about the acquisition of the various plants and jokes about the royal family’s attachment to the various specimens … it had been one of the better parts of the tour, in fact. Better than the stuffy archivist’s long-winded and rather anxious descriptions of how the palace library worked, that was for sure.

Elijah had been pleased, he could tell that much from the way the old wolf smiled at him in the throne room. Though tensions had been a little high at first, it hadn’t been long until the Alphas and their mates began to relax, accepting that the invitation had been offered in good faith, and that his hospitality and welcome were both genuine. It remained to be seen what the rest of the city would make of the invitation, of course—but Bryant was confident in his decision. The wolves were citizens of Volentis, just the same as its dragon shifter population. If that was a point of conflict … well, maybe that conversation needed to be had. He was ready for it.

What he wasn’t ready for, though, was Willow turning up on the doorstep of his office again. He’d sent her a message after her presentation more out of politeness than anything—he didn’t want her to think he was angry with her for leaving on Sunday night. The truth was, he’d tried very hard to be angry with her. Anger would have been a much more comfortable feeling than what he actually felt—which was hurt, and lost, and betrayed, and lonely, and frightened, as though something very precious had slipped through his grasp somehow. But what could he have done better? Was there some combination of words and actions that would have made her stay there at his side? Impossible to say … impossible to know. And the more he thought about it, the more convinced he was that he was going to drive himself insane.

“Willow,” he said, shocked to see her standing there. “I—didn’t think you’d come.”

“Neither did I,” she said bluntly, something in her eyes that intrigued him. Something he’d rarely seen there before. Something that spoke of … uncertainty. Doubt. Confusion. Was it possible that Willow, the most composed, decisive woman he’d ever met, wasn’t sure of her feelings? He felt a burst of hope that he did his best to repress, knowing how badly hope had hurt him in the past.
